Some veterinarians dedicate their lives to treating animals. Others devote themselves to research, education, and shaping future veterinarians.
Dr. Elfren Fernandez Celestino Jr. has built a remarkable career doing all three.
His academic journey began at Central Luzon State University (CLSU), where he earned two degrees, both with Latin honors:
- 2001: BS Animal Husbandry, Cum Laude
- 2003: Doctor of Veterinary Science and Medicine, Cum Laude
- 2010: MS Animal Breeding, UP Los Baños
- 2021: PhD in Animal Breeding and Genetics, North Dakota State University, USA — Perfect 4.00 GPA
He was also recognized as the Most Outstanding Veterinary Student in 2003 by Intervet Philippines.
Four international scholarships and fellowships
His pursuit of knowledge brought him across the world through prestigious programs:
- Fulbright Fellow (2017–2019)
- Ford Foundation Fellow (2007–2010)
- VLIR-UOS Scholar, Belgium (2016)
- China Ministry of Commerce Scholar (2012)
Beyond these achievements, his credentials include three Diplomate distinctions from the Philippine College of Veterinary Surgeons, Philippine College of Canine Practitioners, and Philippine College of Ruminant Practitioners.
A scientist, educator, and leader
Dr. Celestino has contributed to international scientific publications in animal genetics, reproduction, and livestock research, including studies published in the Journal of Animal Science, Frontiers in Genetics, and Livestock Science.
He also led two PCAARRD-funded dairy goat research projects with combined funding of ₱3.3 million.
His professional journey eventually brought him to the position of Dean of the College of Veterinary Science and Medicine at CLSU from May 2026 to present.
His advocacy centers on academic excellence, student welfare, stronger mentorship, and international collaboration in veterinary education.
The legacy of an educator
Two Cum Laude degrees. A doctorate with a perfect GPA. Four international scholarships and fellowships. Three Diplomate distinctions. Scientific publications. Millions in research funding. And academic leadership.
An extraordinary résumé by any professional standard.
But perhaps his greatest contribution cannot be measured by academic grades, awards, or professional titles.
It is measured by the students he has taught, the knowledge he has shared, and the future veterinarians he has helped shape.
Because eventually, titles change, positions end, and awards become memories.
But the knowledge we pass on to the next generation becomes our legacy.
Congratulations, Dr. Elfren F. Celestino Jr., for your remarkable contributions to Philippine veterinary medicine.
Sharing this helps others understand what it really means to be a vet. Like and follow if you’re with us.
Dr. Geoff Carullo is a Fellow and the current President of the Philippine College of Canine Practitioners.
